School Holiday On September 2: Torrential rains have thrown life out of gear across several parts of North India, prompting authorities in multiple states to announce school closures. While some regions have opted for complete shutdowns of educational institutions, others like Gurugram have shifted to online learning to ensure academic continuity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and red alerts in different states, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential landslides.
Gurugram
In Gurugram, the district magistrate issued an advisory late on Monday night asking all schools to conduct online classes on Tuesday, September 2. The advisory followed IMD’s forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the district. Officials said the city had already recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall between 3 pm and 7 pm on Monday. In addition to schools, corporate offices and private institutions in Gurugram have been asked to encourage work-from-home arrangements to ensure public safety and avoid travel during the peak rain period.
Delhi
The national capital and adjoining NCR region continued to witness heavy showers and thunderstorms on Monday, leading to traffic congestion and waterlogging in several areas. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Delhi, indicating the possibility of further intense rainfall. Despite the weather warnings, the Delhi government has not yet declared a holiday for schools.
Noida & Ghaziabad
Neighbouring Noida and Ghaziabad have also been battered by heavy rain, with several low-lying areas reporting waterlogging. However, as of now, no school holidays have been declared in either district. Authorities are keeping a watch on the situation and may take further steps if the weather worsens.
Jammu
In Jammu division, all government and private schools have been ordered to remain closed due to adverse weather conditions. The administration said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff in view of heavy rainfall and the possibility of flash floods.
Punjab
The Punjab government has announced holidays in all schools till September 3. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains confirmed that the order covers all government, aided, recognised, and private schools across the state. The decision was taken following directives from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who reviewed the worsening flood situation in several districts. Authorities said the precautionary closure will allow disaster management teams to focus on relief efforts.
Himachal Pradesh
In Himachal Pradesh, schools and colleges in nine districts — Shimla, Kangra, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Solan, and Lahaul-Spiti have been ordered shut after the IMD issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. The hill state has been reeling under severe rain-related incidents, with landslides and flash floods reported from multiple locations. Tragically, five people, including a father and daughter, lost their lives in landslides in Shimla. Officials from the state meteorological centre said August 2025 has been the wettest in the last 76 years, with 431.3 mm of rain recorded.

Uttarakhand (Chamoli District)
In Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, all schools and Anganwadi centres from Classes 1 to 12 have been ordered to remain closed due to forecasts of very heavy rainfall. The region has also witnessed landslides, one of which near Munkatiya on the Kedarnath route claimed two lives and injured six others. Authorities have suspended the Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib pilgrimages until September 5 as a precaution.
Chandigarh
The Union Territory of Chandigarh, which serves as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, has also announced school closures on Tuesday after three consecutive days of heavy rain. The city has received close to 100 mm of rainfall since Sunday, prompting authorities to shut down schools to avoid risks to students and staff.
