Every Sunday is a holiday across schools in the state. In August, Sundays will fall on August 3 , 10, 17, 24, and 31.

According to the holiday calendar released by the Uttarakhand government at the beginning of the year, there will be three major public holidays in August 2025. These holidays coincide with festivals and special days eagerly awaited by everyone, from children to adults. Most schools will be closed during these days, providing children with a double bonus – no studies, no homework. However, schools organise enjoyable programmes on Independence Day.
August 9 (Saturday) – Raksha Bandhan
August 15 (Friday) – Independence Day
August 16 (Saturday) – Shri Krishna Janmashtami
Every Sunday is a holiday across schools in the state. In August, Sundays will fall on August 3 , 10, 17, 24, and 31. If we subtract three public holidays and five Sundays from the 31 days of August, schools will be open only for 23 days, remaining closed for eight days.
Most schools in Uttarakhand will also be closed during these festivals and holidays. Furthermore, it’s the rainy season in Uttarakhand. During heavy rain alerts, the District Magistrate may intermittently close schools, increasing the number of holidays in August.

Not just Uttarakhand, schools across India will observe several notable holidays for occasions such as Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, Janmashtami, and Ganesh Chaturthi. Raksha Bandhan falls on Saturday, August 9, and with Sunday following, many schools might offer a two-day or even a three-day break in certain states. From August 15-17, students can enjoy a long weekend, as Independence Day is on Friday, Janmashtami is on Saturday, followed by Sunday. Ganesh Chaturthi is on Wednesday, August 27, providing a midweek holiday.
Additionally, each school or institute has its own policies regarding Saturday and Sunday holidays. Some schools are closed every Saturday, while others close on the second or last Saturday. Some schools have half-day classes on Saturdays. Most schools are closed on Sundays. August 2025 includes five Saturdays (2, 9, 16, 23 and 30) and five Sundays (3, 10, 17, 24, and 31).
